During our Practicum placement time, we are required to teach at least one lesson on our own. The lesson I chose to write and be observed on was a math lesson on Mean, Median, Mode, and Range.
For my lesson on mean, median, mode, and range, I decided to make a formative assessment in the form of a card game. Students were arranged in their table groups and each table was given a bag of cards (some made by me, and some from a deck of cards). Each student at the table got the chance to pull out five cards at random. As a group, the students had to go through the processes involved in finding the mean, median, mode and range of each set of data pulled from the bag. During this time, I walked around to observe that the class was grasping the concepts I was teaching them. If they had any questions, this was the time to ask them.
Summative Assessment
For the summative assessment portion of the lesson, I decided on two items. The first was a "Quick Check" from the text book. This gave me a good glance at what parts of the lesson I needed to reteach. The second was an exit slip. I wrote on the board three sets of data and had the students work each set out to find the mean, median, mode and range. They wrote these in their journals, but showed them to me before leaving Ms. Brown's classroom to return to their homeroom class.
